Freshly cut hair is small, sharp and surprisingly difficult to remove from clothing. Short clipper-cut hairs can work into the weave of a T-shirt, sit inside collars and remain there after washing.

You cannot remove every strand from a working barbershop or salon, but you can reduce how much sticks to your clothes and how much you carry home.

Why does cut hair stick to clothes?

Hair catches in soft, textured and loosely woven fabrics. Cotton, fleece and knitted garments contain fibres and small gaps that allow sharp hair fragments to become embedded. Static, moisture and repeated movement can make the problem worse.

Wear smoother workwear

The most effective change is to create a barrier between loose hair and your everyday clothing. Smooth 100% polyester is less textured than many casual fabrics, allowing hair to brush away more easily.

Close the gaps

• Use an adjustable or close-fitting collar.
• Choose cuffed sleeves rather than wide open wrists.
• Use cuffed trousers to reduce hair entering from below.
• Wear a complete top and trouser set when an apron does not provide enough coverage.

Brush off before leaving work

Remove as much surface hair as possible before taking the garment off. A soft clothing brush, lint roller or appropriate air blower can help with loose hair. Always follow workplace safety guidance when using compressed air or electrical equipment.

Keep barber clothes separate

Where practical, change before travelling home and store used workwear in a separate washable bag. Avoid shaking hair-covered garments in the car or house. Remove loose hair before washing and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Protect the clothes underneath

A removable outer layer means your normal clothing receives less direct exposure. At the end of the shift, the protective garment can be taken off before you sit in the car, visit friends or relax at home.

Can clothing completely repel hair?

No fabric can guarantee that every hair will slide away. Hair-resistant or hair-repellent clothing is designed to reduce clinging and make loose hair easier to remove. The design of the collar, wrists and ankles matters as much as the fabric itself.
